Last Day in Breslau and Road Trip to Leamington - Ultimo Dia en Breslau y Traslado a Leamington

Breslau, Ontario - Today was the last time the Papalotzin crew started the day at the Kennema´s, our kind host family, in Breslau, Ontario; where their beautiful greenhouse, butterfly gardens and educational center, the Blooming Center, is located.

We received the visit of our dearly friend, Donald Davis, whom we truly thank his sincere enthusiasm and support during all these past days. We appreciate his valuable help and admire all the work he has dedicated to the study of the Monarch Butterfly.

In the morning Vico, Luis and Tania visited John Power´ s residence, who showed us his impressive butterfly collection and objects related to them; from which highlights, The certificate of the Guinness Book of Records for possessing the famous Thysania Agrippina the most exotic of the small butterflies.

We looked at the 62,000 stamps related to butterflies as well as to his impressive tags collection to identify and trace their migration since 1937. Finally we delighted ourselves watching his 20,000 butterfly collection from all around the world.

Back to the Kennema’s family house, we enjoyed a delicious meal cooked by Mrs. Sabina Kennema. Then we hit the road towards Leamington, Ontario, where an event will take place in front the Point Pelee National Park.

We are very excited about the event tomorow. Vico will be landing Papalotzin at Point Pelee National Park.

Breslau, Ontario - El equipo de Papalotzin amanecio por ultima vez en la casa de nuestros amabilisimos anfitriones, la familia Kennema en Breslau, Ontario, en su hermoso invernadero, mariposario y centro educativo, el Blooming Center.

Recibimos la visita de nuestro estimado Donald Davis, a quien agradecemos sinceramente su apoyo y entusiasmo durante todos estos días. Apreciamos su valiosisima ayuda y admiramos todo el trabajo que ha dedicado en el estudio de la Mariposa Monarca.

Por la mañana, Tania, Luis y Vico visitamos la residencia de nuestro respetable John Powers, quien nos mostro su impresionante coleccion de mariposas y objetos relacionados con las mariposas, de la cual destaco el acta del Guinness Book of Records que recibio por poseer la famosa Thysania Agrippina, la mas exotica de las palomillas.

Nos mostro entre miles de objetos valiosisimos, su coleccion de 62 000 estampillas relacionadas con las mariposas y su coleccion de "tags" o etiquetas para  identificar a las mariposas y rastrearlas en su migracion desde 1937, tambien nos ofrecio el deleite de contemplar su coleccion de veinte mil mariposas  de todo el mundo.

Al regresar a la casa de nuestra queridisima familia Kennema, disfrutamos de la exquisita comida de la Señora Sabina Kennema y posteriormente partimos rumbo a Lemington, Ontario, donde se oficiará el evento programado para el día de mañana, el 1ro. de septiembre, frente al parque nacional de Point Pelee.

El evento que se llevara a cabo mañana sera un celebre acontecimiento, donde acudiran invitados de los dos paises, Canada y Mexico, como un simbolo de conexion ecologica y cultural, ya que en este poblado miles de mexicanos ofrecen su trabajo temporalmente.

Todo el equipo esta muy emocionado por el evento  de mañana, donde nuestro querido piloto, Vico Gutierrez, aterrizara el Papalotzin.

A Wonderful Day at Breslau - Un Dia Maravilloso en Breslau

The day began with a beautiful Dutch breakfast and a smile!  The energy of the team is high as we had spent the evening relaxing with the Kennema family and eating from an amazing BBQ the afternoon of the 29th. 

Prepared to fly the next leg to point Pelee but not prepared for the arrival of hurricane Katrina, the event has been postponed for a day and we are using this time to wash our clothes and rest a little with our incredible host family.

Papalotzin was the center of stage at the Greenway Blooming Center with many visitors throughout the day taking great interest in the project.  Lots of kids, lots of fun.

Vico was interviewed by Voice of America and it went fabulously.

Greg and Andrew accompanied John Powers (JUAN PODERES) to a farm rich with Alfalfa plants, and full, I mean full,  of Monarch butterflies.  They are everywhere and it seems they are ready to fly.

Then they spent the afternoon with John in his butterfly museum at his home. Truly an incredible experience. John Powers is the "Butterfly Man".  Vico and the team are all in awe of his knowledge and collection. 

Papalotzin would like to thank from the bottom of our hearts all the wonderful people of Breslau that have adopted us over the past few days.  Now we understand the meaning of Canadian hospitality. Tomorrow the Papalotzin crew will leave for Point Pelee.

Dia maravilloso para el equipo Papalotzin! Con un desayuno al estilo holandes y todos con una gran sonrisa. La energia del equipo se encuentra en un gran esplendor despues de disfrutar con la familia Kennema la increible parrillada de leña del dia anterior (el 29 de agosto).

El huracan Katrina retraso nuestro vuelo hacia Point Pelee y por lo tanto el evento en el Parque se pospuso para el 1ro. de septiembre. Aprovechamos entonces para hacer una limpieza general de ropas y camioneta. El ultraligero fue instalado en el mariposario-invernadero, Blooming Center, donde recibio miles de visitas de gente interesada en el proyecto.

Vico fue entrevistado para Voice of America.

Greg y Andrew fueron con John Powers (Juan Poderes) a una granja abundante en alfalfa donde avistaron gran cantidad de Monarcas, pero una gran, gran cantidad de Monarcas.

Despues pasaron la tarde en la casa de John Powers, "The Butterfly Man" quien les mostro su increible museo de la Mariposa.  Una experiencia unica.

Vico y todo el equipo estamos en deuda con el deslumbrante conocimiento que se nos ha sido compartido.

El equipo Papalotzin quisieramos agradecer de todo corazon a toda la gente de Breslau que nos ha adoptado los ultimos dias. Ahora comprendemos el significado de la hospitalidad Canadiense. El dia de mañana se espera un dia lluvioso, partiremos a medio dia hacia el Parque Point Pelee.

We received a phone call from the Mexican Embassy in Canada to let us know that Jerry Pickard, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Industry and member of the House of Commons, 37th Parliament, will be attending the Point Pelee event.

Welcome Celebration Planned for Papalotzin LEAMINGTON, Ontario, Aug. 29 /CNW Telbec/ - Point Pelee National Park of Canada and the Corporation of the Municipality of Leamington, in collaboration with the Leamington and District Chamber of Commerce, are hosting a welcome celebration for Papalotzin, a tiny one-person ultra-light plane being flown from Canada to Mexico following the migration path of the monarch butterfly. The purpose of this journey is to raise awareness for monarch butterfly
conservation.

The event, scheduled to be held on Wednesday August 31st at 10:30 but postponed due to impending post-tropical storm Katrina until Thursday September 1st at 9:30, will recognize and celebrate the cultural and natural connections the region has with Mexico.

The community of Leamington seasonally employs over 4000 people each year from Mexico. Similarly, monarch butterflies make their way from Canada to Mexico and back each year.

The Papalotzin (an Aztec word for "small butterfly") project is being spearheaded by Francisco "Vico" Gutierrez, the ultra-light pilot and project director, along with the Mexican Michoacan State Government and the World Wildlife Fund-Mexico. The trip is being filmed for a documentary about the life, flight and challenges of the monarch butterfly.

During the journey, the Papalotzin crew will be organizing events and press conferences to raise awareness of both local and international monarch conservation issues.

The ultralight plane, which is painted like a monarch, will begin its journey in Montreal, Quebec, continue through the province of Ontario, the United States, and into Mexico, ending its journey in the butterfly sanctuaries of Michoacan.

As a public celebration, everyone is invited. The event will start with the ultra-light plane landing near the Leamington Marina. Anticipated landing
time is 10:30 am. The Papalotzin welcoming celebration will include a sampling
of locally prepared Mexican food and Mexican music.

The Pelee Island Winery, the Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers and Flavour Pict Produce are sponsoring the celebration. The Pelee Island Winery is also sponsoring the pilot and crew during their stay in Leamington and on Pelee Island.

Point Pelee National Park of Canada is one of 41 national parks in Canada protecting and presenting significant examples of our nation's natural and cultural heritage.

Toronto - Waterloo - Breslau

The first flight was from Mike Robertson  Field to the Waterloo Airport in Cambridge, Ontario. The second flight was from Waterloo  to the fields in Breslau near a museum and butterfly garden which contains a very big and interesting collection  owned by John Powers.

There they met Carl Hiebert known photographer and pilot. They flew side by side and Carl took photos and video from his plane to the Papalotzin.

Greg Allen attended the City TV Breslau studios to talk about the project .

They will spend the night at Breslau and tomorrow they will fly to Point Pelee.

Despegaron de la pista de Mike Robertson emprendiendo un vuelo al aeropuerto Waterloo en Cambridge, Ontario. El segundo vuelo del dia fue de Waterloo a unos campos en Breslau enfrente del museo y mariposario propiedad del Sr. John Powers.

Ahi se encontraron con el renombrado fotografo y piloto Carl Hiebert quien,  desde su avioneta, volo con Papalotzin y nos ayudo a realizar tomas aereas de Papalotzin y el documental. Al final Carl le obsequio un libro de su obra a Vico y Equipo.

La locacion fue el GREENWAY Blooming Centre 2000 Shantz Station Rd, Breslau, ON, NOB 1MO, contacto  flowers @ greenwaybloom.com, propiedad de Kees y Sabina Kennema. En el lugar  se encuentran diversos invernaderos, mariposarios y un centro educativo sobre la mariposa con una gran coleccion de diferentes objetos e instalaciones. La coleccion es propiedad del Sr. John Powers.

Simultaneamente el Sr. Gregory Allen asisitio a los estudios de City TV en Breslau donde realizo una entrevista en vivo para platicar del proyecto.

Hoy en la noche dormiran en Breslau cerca del mariposario y mañana si las condiciones del tiempo son adecuadas volaran de Breslau a Poin Pelee.

A Very Active Day in Toronto - Un Dia de Mucha Actividad en Toronto

Toronto, Ontario - Visit to Glen Loates, Canada’s distinguished artist. He showed the team his work in progress. He recently traveled 2 miles down the sea in a submarine to sketch and capture the wild life under the sea.

Glen gave each member of the Papalotzin team a print of his Monarch Butterfly paint. He also gave 2 prints to the team to deliver one to Mexico’s President Vicente  Fox and Michoacan Governor Lazaro Cardenas Batel and his wife Mayra Padilla.

From there the team traveled to the CN Tower Plaza  to tape interviews with Donald Davis and John Powers.

Luis Alberto Miranda joined the team in Toronto.

They spent the night at Mike Robertson’s residence in Pickering County.

Parte de su proyecto actual fue realizado en un submarino en el cual se sumergio a dos millas debajo del mar para poder retratar animales marinos que habitan en esas profundidades.

Glenn obsequio al equipo de Papalotzin una serigrafia de la Mariposa Monarca,  al igual que mando con el Equipo una para el Cd. Presidente Vicente Foz Quezada y otra para el Cd. Gobernador de Michoacán Lazaro Cardenas Batel y a su señora esposa Mayra Padilla.

De ahi se desplazaron a la explanada de la Torre CN, en el centro de  Toronto, para realizar entrevistas con Donald Davis y John Powers.

Rockcliffe - Norwood - Pickering

Rockcliffe Parkway, Ottawa - Vico succesfully took off from Rockcliffe Airport and headed towards Norwood, 200 kms distance. He will meet with Ground Team at a small airport. After re-filling the gas tank and recovering energies, he will take off again for another hour and a half flight to get to final base for today at Pickering, Toronto.

Reconaissance Flights - Vuelos de Reconocimiento

Rockcliffe Parkway, Ottawa - During the day we have done several  flights around the area of the Rockcliffe Airport. The Canada Aviation Museum (www.aviation.nmstc.ca), which is very impressive and interesting, is located just next to the airfield. Later today we will head towards Toronto. We think it´s going to take us a day and a half to get there.

Reception at the Royal Mint. A commemorative coin of the Monarch Butterfly was given to Francisco Gutierrez ´Vico´  by her designer, Susan Taylor. We also made an interview.

We took the EuroVan to Volkswagen´s workshop for a maintenance service.

Then we attended a press conference organized by the Embassy of Mexico in Canada in which the Project Papalotzin was fully explained to the media. We received a good review and the interest of the Ambassador, Maria Teresa Garcia de Madero, and a warm reception was offered for us.

Official take off at Grandby, Montreal. Good luck boys!

Visit to the Milkweed Fields of Dave Clermont, butterfly specialist, who also was interviewed. We took a walk around his butterfly gardens and it took place an event where the Ultralight took off, symbolically cause the wethear conditions weren’t the appropriates. Finally we participated in a beautiful gathering with people of the Insectarium that came to the appointment.

Despegue Oficial en Grandby, Montreal. Buena suerte muchachos!

Visitamos los Campos de Asclepias de Dave Clermont, especialista en mariposas, a quien se le realizó una entrevista. Recorrimos sus mariposarios y se llevo a cabo un evento donde el Ultraligero despegó, muy simbólicamente ya que las condiciones climáticas no eran las más apropiadas. Finalmente participamos en un hermoso convívio con gente del Insectario que acudió a la cita.

Botanical Gardens, Montreal. We received the visit of Mexican Consellour in Canada Maria Elena Alcaraz and Corrie Castello. The day went beautiful in the park, and a lot of people interested on the project attended. We also received the reps of the Tecnologico of Monterrey in Mexico, whom may be interested in supporting the project.

Jardín Botánico, Montreal. Tuvimos la visita del Cónsul de México en Canadá María Elena Alcaraz y de su adjunta, Corrie Castello. El día estuvo bellísimo en el parque y acudió una gran cantidad de gente interesada en el proyecto,  recibimos a los representantes del Tecnológico de Monterrey en México, quienes se mostraron interesados en apoyar al proyecto.
