Papalotzin at the November 20th Parade - Papalotzin en el Desfile del 20 de Noviembre

Just a quick note to let you know that Papalotzin will be participating in November 20th parade, one of the most important events to celebrate the XCV Anniversary of the Mexican Revolution.

Join us next Sunday morning in Mexico City's Main Square (Zocalo) or along the parade's path across some important avenues of the downtown area.

The parade will start in Pino Suarez St.,  it will continue around the Zocalo (Main Square) and in  front of Palacio Nacional (Government Palace), then it will take Eje Central to continue through Juarez Av. and finally end up at the Monumento de la Revolucion (Revolution Monument)

Solo una nota rápida para informar que Papalotzin estará participando en el desfile del 20 Noviembre, unos de los eventos más importantes para celebrar el XCV Aniversario de la Revolución Mexicana.

Acompáñanos en el Zócalo y en las principales avenidas del centro de la Ciudad de México el próximo domingo por la mañana.

La ruta del desfile comenzará en la calle  Pino Suárez para una vez que pasen frente a Palacio Nacional dar vuelta a la izquierda en 5 de Mayo, posteriormente transitar por Eje Central para concluir su recorrido por Avenida Juárez hasta el Monumento a la Revolución.

Welcome for Papalotzin in the Claude Terrain Aerodrome

From Morelia the Papalotzin took off piloted by Vico Gutierrez accompanied by his son, Nicolas Gutierrez. Alongside, in the ultralight “Aguila Azul” his brother, paraglider champion, Miguel Gutierrez and son, Patricio Gutierrez Ruano.

The panoramic flight went extremely well and was full of emotion. When the two ultralights landed, more than 30 people, relatives and friends were waiting at the air strip. The event was organized by the partners of the Claude Terrain Club, amongst them were the pilots Luis Cutler, Guillermo Stein and Fernando Gutierrez. Vico’s wife, Nane Wenhammar had flown towards Michoacan with pilot Luis Cutler in his  airplane and joined both ultralights in mid flight to arrive in Valle de Bravo together.

Finally the famous Monarch, Papalotzin, hibernates in its sanctuary in Valle de Bravo, as the Monarchs are still arriving to their Mexican forests.

This is a moment of reflection and consciousness. May the Monarch butterflies become a symbol of environmental conservation. By taking care of the Monarchs and their habitats throughout their migration, we will protect them for future generations to come. Also, all the species involved within their ecosystems will be protected and their forests will be conserved, as well as the cultures that have given them life.

A new year will begin and it is important to create an alternative plan in which all those people who have been touched by this project and its achievements will fight in order to live in harmony with and for nature.

Deep thanks to all those friends of Papalotzin and the Monarch butterfly who have made this extraordinary adventure possible and those who supported the journey and shared their knowledge and wisdom.

Bienvenida de Papalotzin en la Pista Aeródromo Claude Terrain

De Morelia despegó el Papalotzin piloteado por Vico Gutierrez, acompañado de su hijo, Nicolás Gutiérrez. Un vuelo en patrulla junto con su hermano, gran piloto campeón de Parapente, Miguel Gutierrez, quien piloteaba el avión cámara acompañado de su hijo, Patricio Gutierrez Ruano.

El panorámico vuelo se realizó sin complicaciones, a vuelo de Monarca. Al aterrizar, más de treinta personas, familiares y amigos de Vico se encontraban en la pista para recibirlo. La recepción fue organizada por los socios honorarios del Club Claude Terrain, entre ellos los pilotos Luis Cultler, Guillermo Stein y Fernando Gutierrez. Por supuesto también se encontraba la esposa de Vico, Nane Wenhammar, quien levantándose muy temprano por la mañana, voló desde Valle de Bravo junto con Luis Cutler, en su avioneta, hacia Michoacán. En el aire se encontraron con ambos ultraligeros, con quienes emprendieron el vuelo hacia Valle de Bravo.

Finalmente la famosa gran Monarca Papalotzin hiberna en su Santuario de Valle de Bravo y las Monarca aún siguen arribando a sus bosques mexicanos.

Que sea un momento para todos de reflexión y conciencia. Que las mariposas Monarca se conviertan en el símbolo de conservación ambiental, que al proteger a las Monarca se protejan sus hábitats a lo largo de su recorrido, que se protejan todas las especies involucradas en sus ecosistemas, que se conserven sus bosques, así como las culturas que les han dado vida.

Un nuevo año comenzará, una nueva forma de vida en la cual todos aquellos que han sido de alguna manera tocados por este proyecto, se esfuercen en la gran misión de vivir en armonía con y para la naturaleza.

Profundos agradecimientos para todos aquellos amigos de Papalotzin y de la mariposa Monarca, quienes hicieron este sueño posible, quienes apoyaron la travesía y quienes nos compartieron su conocimiento.

The Arrival of the Monarchs and Papalotzin - La llegada de las Monarca y de Papalotzin - Eduardo Rendón, WWF México

As in ancient times and even up to date, now is the time of the arrival of the dead souls for the Otomi and Mazahua cultures. It’s also the time when the Monarch butterflies arrive and with them the maize crops are harvested. Therefore it is time of prosperity and the Monarchs have arrived on time, as they do each year, faithful to their appointment with the Winter in their forest sanctuaries in the State of Mexico and Michoacan.

Today people rejoice because, with their arrival, the Monarch butterflies bring richness throughout the region. The reason is that tourists from around the country and the entire world will bring with them benefits for all the forests’ owners. That’s why more than 800 people gather at the Llano de Las Papas in Angangueo,  Michoacan, to welcome the Monarch travelers who have just arrived from Canada and the United States.

But this time they didn’t arrive alone! They were accompanied through all their journey by the big size butterfly, hailed at by the humans as Papalotzin! Papalotzin!

Yes! The Papalotzin, an ultralight plane dressed as a Monarch Butterfly, today fulfills the dream of a man, “Vico” Gutierrez, and his team.  At the precise moment when the Papalotzin lands, I feel shivers down my spine, because the dream now has come true, the Papalotzin has flown with the Monarchs through their journey.

For those of us who conceive nature as our way of life, not only because we feed and breath from her, but also because by taking care of her we can support our families, the arrival of Papalotzin represented a challenge of life for humanity, because in this team of brave men and women who were decided to fight for this, project lied all the hopes to succeed in such a prowess that only nature has accomplished.

This prowess is the Monarch butterfly’s migration, insect whose fragile appearance doesn’t hinder her from showing us, year after year, how to succeed in unimaginable quests and feats and giving us an example of how putting all of our efforts together we will be able to stop the wasting away of our planet, and, why not, even revert it so that our children, their children and so on until eternity, can live in harmony with nature. 

The flight of the Monarch was then emulated by "Vico" Gutierrez and his group of “warriors”, admirable representatives of the human race who not only managed to awaken respect for the migration of these butterflies, but also made a mark in the books of history as those who decided to lead and perform a movement for the safekeeping of the environment which will surely allow for a new beginning of the relationship between the human form and its current environment.

But, how did these Papalotzin humans achieve their feat? Well, the secret is that the members of the Papalotzin team are sensitive, sensible, loving and mostly passionate people who, even against the weariness of a journey, managed to awaken all the –also loving- people who offered their homes and food as they do with the Monarchs when they are southbound.

For their achievement, committed and honest, whose sole interest was their love for the Monarch, I thank and dedicate my work to them, hoping that it will be a worthy gift to “Vico”, Tania, Luis, Greg, Andrew and Claudia, who have given me an example of strength and have renewed my motivation to keep fighting for the conservation of the Monarch Butterfly, the forests and most of all the humans that populate this corner of the world.

Como en la época prehispánica y aún en la actualidad hoy es el tiempo de la llegada de las almas de los muertos para los pueblos Otomí y Mazahua. También es el tiempo de la llegada de las mariposas Monarca y con ellas el tiempo de la cosecha del maíz. Por lo tanto son tiempos de prosperidad y las mariposas han llegado puntuales, como cada año,  fieles a su cita de invierno en los bosques del Estado de México y Michoacán.

Actualmente la gente se regocija porque con su llegada las mariposas Monarca siguen trayendo riqueza a las personas de la región. La razón es que los turistas de todo México y el mundo traen consigo beneficios para los dueños de los bosques. Por ello una multitud de más de 800 personas se aglutinan en el Llano de la Papas en Angangueo Michoacán, para dar la bienvenida a las viejeras que desde Canadá y los Estados Unidos han llegado.

¡Pero esta vez no vienen solas! las acompañó en todo su viaje una mariposa de gran tamaño, a quien los humanos gritamos ¡Papalotzín! ¡Papalotzín!

¡Sí!, el Papalotzín, que es un avión ataviado como una mariposa Monarca y hoy cumple con el sueño anhelado por un hombre, el “Vico” Gutiérrez y su equipo.

En este momento cuando aterriza el Papalotzín me estremezco porque el sueño ya es una realidad y el “Vico”  ¡lo ha logrado!, ha volado al lado de las mariposas durante toda su travesía.

Con la llegada del Papalotzín quienes concebimos a la naturaleza como nuestro modo de vida, pues no solo de ella nos alimentamos y respiramos, sino que de su cuidado podemos mantener a nuestras familias, el Papalotzín representó un reto de vida para la humanidad, pues en un equipo de mujeres y hombres valientes y decididos, quienes conformaron este gran proyecto, estaban cifradas las esperanzas de lograr por parte del hombre una proeza tal que solo la naturaleza ha logrado a lo largo de la historia de la vida en nuestro planeta.

Esta proeza es la migración de la mariposa Monarca, insecto cuya apariencia frágil no impide que cada año nos de una muestra de como lograr hazañas inimaginables, y nos da una ejemplo de cómo poniendo todo nuestro empeño podremos detener el deterioro de nuestro planeta, y ¿por qué no? hasta revertirlo para que nuestro hijos y sus hijos, y así sucesivamente hasta la eternidad, los hijos del hombre pueda vivir en armonía con la naturaleza.

El viaje de la Monarca fue emulado entonces por “Vico” Gutiérrez y su grupo de “guerreros”, admirables representantes del género humano quienes no sólo lograron despertar el respeto por la migración de estas mariposas, sino que en la historia quedarán sus nombres como aquellos que se decidieron a encabezar y realizar un movimiento para el cuidado del ambiente, que permitirá con toda seguridad un inicio nuevo para la relación entre la forma humana y su entorno natural.

Pero, ¿cómo lograron estos humanos del Papalotzín su hazaña?, pues el secreto es que los integrantes del Papalotzín son un equipo de personas sensibles, amorosas y sobre todo apasionadas, quienes aún contra el cansancio de un largo viaje supieron despertar en todos los rincones del continente donde estuvieron, a todos aquellos -también amorosos- quienes les ofrecieron sus casas y su comida tal como lo hacen con las Monarcas cuando realizan su viaje.

Por su logro, comprometido y honesto cuyo único interés fue su amor por la Monarca doy gracias y dedicó mi trabajo, esperando que sea un digno regalo al “Vico”, Tania, Luis, Greg, Andrew y Claudia, quienes me han dado una muestra de fortaleza y han reavivado la motivación por seguir adelante con la conservación de la mariposa Monarca, de los bosques y sobre todo de los humanos que pueblan este pedacito de mundo.

Papalotzin has reached its final destination... / Papalotzin llegando a su meta final...

Both ultralight planes took off from the Saltillo airport, which was beautifully decorated by numerous clusters of Monarch butterflies resting in the trees before the sun would wake them up. They landed in Matehuala, San Luis Potosi, a very complicated flight due to the turbulence.

The Papalotzin team gathered on land and our journey begun, towards Real de Catorce, impressive ancient mining city, semi abandoned, between desertic scrubs and cacti, where we sighted a small amount of Monarchs flying at a high altitude.

We crossed the Ogarrio Tunnel that opens into the town of Real de Catorce, where we spent the night. The next day we went back to Matehuala to continue the journey.

On the way we found a field of Zempazuchitl flowers, the typical flowers for the Day of the Death in El Cedral, where we saw a lot of Monarchs feeding.

With a very complicated flight, Papalotzin finally landed in a field in Pozas de Santana, San Luis, and then continued its flight, landing in Villa Hidalgo. There pilot Cristina Hatzner, Christian and Ananda said goodbye to Papalotzin. To all of them thanks for their presence on this journey, their energy and enthusiasm were remarkable for this project.

From Villa Hidalgo we continued the flight landing at San Miguel de Allende airport, our hosts this time being the kind Veronica and the beautiful Ruiz Moller family. To all of them our deepest thanks.

From San Miguel de Allende, Papalotzin flew towards Peña de Bernal in the State of Queretaro, a famous monolithic crag. There the crew gathered and met Daniel Levy, Webmaster for www.papalotzin.com and this blog, and his family.

After an interview with "Doña Tere" in the town of Bernal, who shared with us a beautiful poem about the Monarch Butterfly, and with Layla Levy, creator of the Internet site www.animales-en-extincion.com, amazing enthusiast of environmental conservation. The Papalotzin took off from the highway, an amazing take off, with Daniel Levy as the passenger of honour, towards the city of Celaya.

In Celaya we were supported by Alfonso Nieto and by the Gonzalez family.

We would like to thank Alvaro and his wife Maria Luisa for their kindness.

The team finally gathers in Tuxpan, Michoacan.

As a representative of Canada, we are honoured by the presence of John Powers “The Butterfly Man”, a specialist in butterflies, who gave his unconditional support to the Papalotzin Project from the beginning.

We finally gathered in the beautiful home known as Casa Humboldt in Tuxpan, Michoacan, thanks to  the Office of Tourism of the Government of Michoacan, who sponsored our stay.

The whole team is finally together: Claudia Rosas, executive producer and cornerstone of the project, filmmaker Ricardo Padilla, who has supported the project from day one, Jose Cohen, co-producer, Gaetan Mariage, Thaib Cholac, Luis Miranda, Vico Gutierrez, Veronica, Ernesto Miranda, Andrew Donaldson, Gregory Allen, Eduardo Rendon and myself, Tania Guerrero.

Tomorrow, November 3rd, the Papalotzin will finally arrive at the Cerro de Las Papas in Angangueo, Michoacan. We are looking forward to a great event, which is not the end of the Papalotzin project, but a new beginning in which we hope that all of the unified efforts of such a wonderful project will be reaped in benefit of the conservation of our dearest Monarch Butterfly.

Ambos aviones ultraligeros despegaron del aeropuerto de Saltillo, el cual se adornaba de una gran cantidad de  racimos de Monarcas que descansaban antes de que el sol les alumbrara y continuaran su camino. Aterrizan en Matehuala, San Luis Potosí, un vuelo complicado debido a la turbulencia.

El equipo se reúne en tierra y comenzamos el ascenso hacia Real de Catorce, impresionante ciudad minera, semiabandonada, entre matorrales desérticos y cactus, donde avistamos una pequeña cantidad de Monarcas volando a gran altura. Cruzamos el tunel de Ogarrio y desembocamos al pueblo de Real de Catorce, donde pernoctamos esa noche y al día siguiente regresamos a Matehuala a continuar la travesía.

En el camino encontramos un campo de flor de zempaxuchitl, en la comunidad del Cedral, donde vimos varias Monarcas alimentándose de su néctar.

Con ciertas complicaciones en el vuelo, el Papalotzin finalmente arribó a un claro en las Pozas de Santana, en San Luis. Continuo su vuelo y aterrizó en Villa Hidalgo, donde Cristina Hatzner, Christian y Ananda se despidieron del equipo.  A todos ellos gracias por su presencia en esta travesía, su energía y entusiasmo fueron imprescindibles para este viaje.

De Villa Hidalgo continuamos el viaje aterrizando en San Miguel de Allende, donde amablemente fuimos hospedados por Verónica… y por la familia Ruiz Moller, a todos ellos un gran agradecimiento por su hospitalidad.

De San Miguel de Allende el Papalotzin voló hacia la Peña de Bernal, en el estado de Querétaro. Única pieza monolítica impresionante donde las Monarca realizan una escala en su migración. Ahí el equipo se encontró con Daniel Levy, el Webmaster de la página www.papalotzin.com y de este blog, con su familia.

Después de hacer una entrevista con “Doña Tere” en el pueblo de Bernal, quien nos compartió un hermoso poema dedicado a la mariposa Monarca, y a Layla Levy, creadora de la página www.animales-en-extincion.com, gran entusiasta de la conservación; el Papalotzin despegó de la carretera de Bernal, con Daniel Levy como pasajero de honor, rumbo a la ciudad de Celaya.

En Celaya contamos con el apoyo de Alfonso Nieto y de la familia González. A

Agradecemos a Alvaro y su esposa María Luisa por sus atenciones.

El equipo finalmente se reúne en Tuxpan, Michoacán. Como representante de Canadá, nos honramos con la visita del Sr. John Powers, gran especialista de mariposas, quien apoyó incondicionalmente el Proyecto Papalotzin desde su inicio.

Finalmente nos reunimos en la hermosa casa conocida como Casa Humboldt, en Tuxpan, Michoacán. Gracias a la Secretaría de Turismo del Gobierno de Michoacán, quienes patrocinaron nuestra estancia.

Todo el equipo por fín reunido: Claudia Rosas, productor ejecutivo y pilar fundamental para el Proyecto, el cineasta Ricardo Padilla, quien ha apoyado el proyecto desde su origen, José Cohen, co-oproductor, Gaetan Mariage, Thaib Cholac, Luis Miranda, Vico Gutiérrez, Verónica, Ernesto Miranda, Ricardo Padilla, Andrew Donaldson, Gregory Allen, Eduardo Rendón y su servidora, Tania Guerrero.

Mañana, 3 de noviembre, finalmente el Papalotzin arribará al Llano de las Papas en Angangueo, Michoacán. Nos espera un gran evento, el cual no es el fin del proyecto Papalotzin, si no un nuevo inicio, en el cual esperamos que todos los esfuerzos conjuntos de tan magnífico proyecto sean fructíferos en cuanto a la conservación de nuestra querida mariposa Monarca.
