The Arrival of the Monarchs and Papalotzin - La llegada de las Monarca y de Papalotzin - Eduardo Rendón, WWF México

As in ancient times and even up to date, now is the time of the arrival of the dead souls for the Otomi and Mazahua cultures. It’s also the time when the Monarch butterflies arrive and with them the maize crops are harvested. Therefore it is time of prosperity and the Monarchs have arrived on time, as they do each year, faithful to their appointment with the Winter in their forest sanctuaries in the State of Mexico and Michoacan.

Today people rejoice because, with their arrival, the Monarch butterflies bring richness throughout the region. The reason is that tourists from around the country and the entire world will bring with them benefits for all the forests’ owners. That’s why more than 800 people gather at the Llano de Las Papas in Angangueo,  Michoacan, to welcome the Monarch travelers who have just arrived from Canada and the United States.

But this time they didn’t arrive alone! They were accompanied through all their journey by the big size butterfly, hailed at by the humans as Papalotzin! Papalotzin!

Yes! The Papalotzin, an ultralight plane dressed as a Monarch Butterfly, today fulfills the dream of a man, “Vico” Gutierrez, and his team.  At the precise moment when the Papalotzin lands, I feel shivers down my spine, because the dream now has come true, the Papalotzin has flown with the Monarchs through their journey.

For those of us who conceive nature as our way of life, not only because we feed and breath from her, but also because by taking care of her we can support our families, the arrival of Papalotzin represented a challenge of life for humanity, because in this team of brave men and women who were decided to fight for this, project lied all the hopes to succeed in such a prowess that only nature has accomplished.

This prowess is the Monarch butterfly’s migration, insect whose fragile appearance doesn’t hinder her from showing us, year after year, how to succeed in unimaginable quests and feats and giving us an example of how putting all of our efforts together we will be able to stop the wasting away of our planet, and, why not, even revert it so that our children, their children and so on until eternity, can live in harmony with nature. 

The flight of the Monarch was then emulated by "Vico" Gutierrez and his group of “warriors”, admirable representatives of the human race who not only managed to awaken respect for the migration of these butterflies, but also made a mark in the books of history as those who decided to lead and perform a movement for the safekeeping of the environment which will surely allow for a new beginning of the relationship between the human form and its current environment.

But, how did these Papalotzin humans achieve their feat? Well, the secret is that the members of the Papalotzin team are sensitive, sensible, loving and mostly passionate people who, even against the weariness of a journey, managed to awaken all the –also loving- people who offered their homes and food as they do with the Monarchs when they are southbound.

For their achievement, committed and honest, whose sole interest was their love for the Monarch, I thank and dedicate my work to them, hoping that it will be a worthy gift to “Vico”, Tania, Luis, Greg, Andrew and Claudia, who have given me an example of strength and have renewed my motivation to keep fighting for the conservation of the Monarch Butterfly, the forests and most of all the humans that populate this corner of the world.

Como en la época prehispánica y aún en la actualidad hoy es el tiempo de la llegada de las almas de los muertos para los pueblos Otomí y Mazahua. También es el tiempo de la llegada de las mariposas Monarca y con ellas el tiempo de la cosecha del maíz. Por lo tanto son tiempos de prosperidad y las mariposas han llegado puntuales, como cada año,  fieles a su cita de invierno en los bosques del Estado de México y Michoacán.

Actualmente la gente se regocija porque con su llegada las mariposas Monarca siguen trayendo riqueza a las personas de la región. La razón es que los turistas de todo México y el mundo traen consigo beneficios para los dueños de los bosques. Por ello una multitud de más de 800 personas se aglutinan en el Llano de la Papas en Angangueo Michoacán, para dar la bienvenida a las viejeras que desde Canadá y los Estados Unidos han llegado.

¡Pero esta vez no vienen solas! las acompañó en todo su viaje una mariposa de gran tamaño, a quien los humanos gritamos ¡Papalotzín! ¡Papalotzín!

¡Sí!, el Papalotzín, que es un avión ataviado como una mariposa Monarca y hoy cumple con el sueño anhelado por un hombre, el “Vico” Gutiérrez y su equipo.

En este momento cuando aterriza el Papalotzín me estremezco porque el sueño ya es una realidad y el “Vico”  ¡lo ha logrado!, ha volado al lado de las mariposas durante toda su travesía.

Con la llegada del Papalotzín quienes concebimos a la naturaleza como nuestro modo de vida, pues no solo de ella nos alimentamos y respiramos, sino que de su cuidado podemos mantener a nuestras familias, el Papalotzín representó un reto de vida para la humanidad, pues en un equipo de mujeres y hombres valientes y decididos, quienes conformaron este gran proyecto, estaban cifradas las esperanzas de lograr por parte del hombre una proeza tal que solo la naturaleza ha logrado a lo largo de la historia de la vida en nuestro planeta.

Esta proeza es la migración de la mariposa Monarca, insecto cuya apariencia frágil no impide que cada año nos de una muestra de como lograr hazañas inimaginables, y nos da una ejemplo de cómo poniendo todo nuestro empeño podremos detener el deterioro de nuestro planeta, y ¿por qué no? hasta revertirlo para que nuestro hijos y sus hijos, y así sucesivamente hasta la eternidad, los hijos del hombre pueda vivir en armonía con la naturaleza.

El viaje de la Monarca fue emulado entonces por “Vico” Gutiérrez y su grupo de “guerreros”, admirables representantes del género humano quienes no sólo lograron despertar el respeto por la migración de estas mariposas, sino que en la historia quedarán sus nombres como aquellos que se decidieron a encabezar y realizar un movimiento para el cuidado del ambiente, que permitirá con toda seguridad un inicio nuevo para la relación entre la forma humana y su entorno natural.

Pero, ¿cómo lograron estos humanos del Papalotzín su hazaña?, pues el secreto es que los integrantes del Papalotzín son un equipo de personas sensibles, amorosas y sobre todo apasionadas, quienes aún contra el cansancio de un largo viaje supieron despertar en todos los rincones del continente donde estuvieron, a todos aquellos -también amorosos- quienes les ofrecieron sus casas y su comida tal como lo hacen con las Monarcas cuando realizan su viaje.

Por su logro, comprometido y honesto cuyo único interés fue su amor por la Monarca doy gracias y dedicó mi trabajo, esperando que sea un digno regalo al “Vico”, Tania, Luis, Greg, Andrew y Claudia, quienes me han dado una muestra de fortaleza y han reavivado la motivación por seguir adelante con la conservación de la mariposa Monarca, de los bosques y sobre todo de los humanos que pueblan este pedacito de mundo.
